Description of the Working Group and Objectives
Demand, metering and retail
As an alternative solution to storage of the produced energy, demand response can provide a solution for the difficulty to predict renewable energy sources like solar and wind energy. The consumer is no longer a passive entity but becomes an active participant to the market, offering flexibility to the balancing responsible parties. To enable this, an adequate and harmonized market model is crucial.
Aggregators provide the link between the smart consumer and the market. However, technical and regulatory challenges still exist to provide an optimal integration of the smart consumer with the market.
In order to enable demand response and harvest the yet unknown potential of residential, industrial and commercial flexibility, smart meters should be rolled out. By 2020, more than 200 million smart meters should be installed in the member states. However, the specific functionalities of the smart meters that are currently installed are far from standardized.
