ETP SmartGrids SURVEY on the future of utilities

The ETP SmartGrids is launching an industry-wide survey as to gather your opinion about the future of utilities. The results of the survey will be the basis for the ETP in building long term scenarios for the sector.

Electrical utilities are confronted with numerous, sometimes conflicting, developments. How will this impact their business? We would like to gauge your expert opinion on current developments and their potential impact on the role of the electrical distribution utility.

In addition, the ETP SmartGrids is co-creating the Innovation Programme at the upcoming European Utility Week (3-5 November). Results of this survey will be used in the keynote session of the Innovation Track. The target is to debate around the future of the electrical utility sector.

ETP SG answers to EC consultation on a New Energy Market Design and Risk Preparedness in the area of Security of Electricity Supply

On 8 October the ETP Smartgrids submitted its answers to the two consultations launched by the EC while publishing its Summer Energy Package in July.

The answers represent the consolidated view of the ETP SG which comprises experts from TSOs, DSOs, Technology Providers, ICT, storage, research and academia. Each of these stakeholder groups might have additional opinions in each item. ETP SG is processing these differences and will provides these differences grouped in an organized way.

European Utility week 2015: 3-5 November, Vienna - ETP Smartgrids co-creating the innovation programme

The European Utility Week 2015, the annual landmark event for the entire Smart Utility market, will take place in Vienna on 3-5 November.

Energy Digitalisation Workshop - 24 November 2015, Brussels

On next 24 November, the ETP Smartgrids is organizing a workshop in Brussels dedicated to Energy digitalization. The objective is to gather the most relevant experts in Europe in the area, members and non-members of the ETP Smartgrids and develop together a position paper until the end of the year. This task is led by WG3 chair, Maher Chebbo. The workshop is expected to gather about 35 experts.

2nd ELECTRA / WG1 ETP SmartGrids Joint Technical Workshop: the Web of Cells and alternative Concepts - New Architectures for the Grid of the Future: 10th December 2015, Brussels

Together with the ELECTRA IRP, WG1 of the ETP SmartGrids organizes its 2nd Technical Workshop on 10th December 2015 in Brussels, focusing on the Web of Cells concept as well as alternative operational concepts for the grid of the future.

The event will bring together around 50 Smart Grids experts and aims to highlight the options that new technologies offer and the challenges for a flexible grid, capable of efficiently and optimally linking the sustainable energy sources of 2035 and beyond. Enough time will be dedicated to an open discussion for challenging the proposed solutions, aiming to reach consensus on the most promising concept for building the future grid.

2nd National Smart Grid Webinar: The Norwegian Smartgrid Centre

The National Smart Grid Webinars are an initiative of ETP Smartgrids to promote the interaction and information exchange between the different regions in Europe, more specifically initiatives on smart grids.

On 30th September, as part of the new activities undertaken among National Smartgrids Technology Platforms (NTPs) around Europe, the ETP SmartGrids organised its second webinar, which was attended by 35 people.

After an introduction of the ETP SG, The Norwegian Smartgrid Centre presented its mission and activities thanks to Grete Coldevin. The main objectives of this National Technology Platform are contributing to the formulation of HDVC standards and to foster projects leading to a sustainable sector transition. The presentation was followed by two important Norwegian smart grid projects: The DeVid Project – a National Test and Demonstration for DSOs – and the Egotham project – Testing Dynamic Tariffs in an Aggregated Energy Demand Model. Both projects, introduced to the audience by Hanne Saele and Jorn Enrberg respectively, focus on consumption management.

Report on Aalborg Symposium on Microgrids

The 11th Microgrid Symposium, sponsored by the ETP Smartgrids and chaired by its chair Nikos Hatziargyriou, was held in Aalborg (Denmark) on the 27 and 28th of past August.

The purpose of this event was to exchange information internationally, yet informally, on the current state of research, development and demonstration on microgrids, and to identify key technical, economic, and policy issues that should be addressed for their wide deployment.

The Integrated SET Plan fit for new challenges

On 15 September the European Commission adopted the new Strategic Energy Technology (SET) Plan. The upgraded SET Plan is the first research and innovation deliverable on which the fifth dimension of the Energy Union will be built.

EU to invest EUR 150 million in energy infrastructure

EU Member States agreed in July on a proposal from the European Commission to allocate EUR 150 million to key trans-European energy infrastructure projects.In total, 20 projects were selected following a call for proposals under the Connecting Europe Facility (CEF), an EU funding programme for infrastructure.

Mobilising investment for Europe’s Energy Union

The European Commission agreed in August on a package of measures designed to ensure that the European Fund for Strategic Investments (EFSI) is up and running early autumn. EFSI will be the launchpad for investment in the areas of our economy that need it most, mobilising €315 billion worth of investment over the coming years.
