The European Strategic Energy Technology (SET)-Plan aims to transform energy production and use in the EU with the goal of achieving EU worldwide leadership in the production of energy technological solutions capable of delivering EU 2020 and 2050 targets. The move towards a low-carbon Europe requires innovative research, effective strategic planning and an emphasis on timely and appropriate action.
The two main implementation mechanisms of the SET-Plan are the European Industrial Initiatives (EII) and the European Energy Research Alliance (EERA).
Implementation of the SET-Plan is also supported by a series of industry-led European Technology Platforms (ETPs). These help define research and technological development objectives and lay down concrete goals for achieving them.
Another pillar of support for implementing the SET-Plan is provided by a number of Joint Technology Initiatives. These are public - private partnerships, funded by the European Commission along with Member States and industry.
